Whether you’re building a business or simply broadening your opportunities, networking is an essential step in finding like-minded individuals and organisations to help you on your journey. Despite this, many people still struggle with networking.

Fear of Rejection

One of the most common reasons that people avoid networking is due to the fear of rejection. Usually, this is people dreading the awkwardness of being told “no” or being dismissed. These fears are deeply rooted in us, in our desire to be accepted.

To overcome this, you must understand that not every connection will lead to an opportunity and that there is nothing bad about that. You don’t lose anything from reaching out to someone and that networking isn’t about instant results.

Not Knowing What to Say

Another barrier stopping some people network is not completely knowing what to say. Overthinking words, worrying about silences and awkwardly freezing up is all easily done and can stop the flow of conversation needed when introducing yourself to others and learning more about them. However, networking doesn’t need to be a perfect conversation, the best relationships are real and organic.

Preparing a few conversation starters and using open ended questions can make your discussions sound smoother, but the best talks naturally flow and don’t require too much thought.

Time Constraints

Life can get very busy, but the truth is that networking doesn’t need heaps of free time to occur. You could fit networking into your schedule by setting aside 15 mins a week to engage and make connections on LinkedIn. Also, you could set a goal to attend a networking event per month (it could be virtual). Even scheduling a coffee chat on your lunch break is a great way to get networking without wasting loads of precious time.

Underestimations

The power of networking is commonly underestimated as some believe it’s only necessary when you need it for activities such as job hunting or sourcing clients, however building professional relationships can help you in almost all areas of business and life.

Additionally, people usually underestimate the value that they hold and as a result won’t be able to sell themself well enough at events. So, remember what you bring to the table and don’t be afraid to share it!

You’re Not Alone

Finally, an important point to remember is that you’re not alone and that many professionals have previously struggled with networking, but with time it gets easier. Joining a supportive networking group could be an effective way to introduce yourself to networking and before you know it you’ll be a talking point at events.
