Success doesn’t begin with what is happening around you. It begins with what is happening within you.
The way you speak to yourself, the thoughts you repeatedly focus on and the beliefs you hold about your own abilities can all influence how you approach your business, your career and your life. Developing self-compassion and positive self-talk is therefore an important part of building the mindset needed to keep moving forward.
Connect with Your Internal World
Before you can change your circumstances, it is important to become aware of your internal world.
What are you telling yourself every day?
If you are constantly thinking, “My business is going badly,” “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t have the skills to succeed,” those thoughts can begin to feel like facts. The more we repeat negative beliefs, the easier it can become to accept them without questioning whether they are actually true.
This is why the way you speak to yourself matters.
Instead of focusing solely on what isn’t working, ask yourself what you can do to improve the situation. There is a significant difference between acknowledging a challenge and allowing that challenge to define your entire outlook.
Focus on What You Can Control
There is a concept often referred to as the law of attraction, which suggests that what we focus our thoughts and energy on can influence what we attract into our lives.
Whether or not you subscribe to the law of attraction, there is value in understanding the impact of your focus.
If you spend all your energy thinking about everything that is going wrong, it can become difficult to see opportunities, solutions and possibilities. Instead, try shifting your attention towards what you can control.
If sales aren’t where you want them to be, focus on what you can improve. If you feel your skills aren’t strong enough, identify how you can develop them. If something hasn’t worked, ask what the experience can teach you.
The aim isn’t to pretend everything is perfect. It is to approach challenges from a place of possibility rather than defeat.
Practise Self-Compassion
Being ambitious doesn’t mean you have to be hard on yourself.
There will be mistakes, setbacks and days when things don’t go according to plan. Instead of criticising yourself, try speaking to yourself in the same way you would speak to someone you genuinely want to see succeed.
Self-compassion doesn’t mean making excuses. It means recognising that setbacks are part of the journey and giving yourself the opportunity to learn and improve.
Keep Going When It Gets Difficult
Perhaps one of the most important qualities in business is perseverance.
There will be moments when you question yourself, feel frustrated or want to give up. Those moments can be incredibly difficult, but they can also be the moments when continuing matters most.
Successful people aren’t successful because they never experience doubt. They experience setbacks, uncertainty and frustration too. The difference is that they continue moving forward, even when the outcome isn’t guaranteed.
You may not know exactly where your efforts will lead, but you can choose to keep taking the next step.
Believe in your ability to learn, adapt and improve. Be kind to yourself while remaining committed to your goals.
Change the way you speak to yourself, change where you place your focus and keep going. Your internal world can have a powerful influence on how you approach the world around you.
